Abstract

Chesbrough(2003) demonstrated through various case studies that open innovation has a positive effect on firm performance., Chesbrough focused his analysis on the performance of open innovation of firms based the technology being after the maturity stage on the technology life cycle. The firms chosen for analysis were semi-conductor or computer companies such as IBM or Intel as well as household goods companies such as P&G. Of course he showed that IBM released computer sector which had already proceeded to existing maturity stage through Outward Open Innovation and is actualizing industries with infinite growth potential such as S/W industry through Inward Open Innovation. But this S/W industry is already the one passing deep through the maturity stage in view of the overal technology base of the relevant industry., Given the limitation mentioned before, this study tries to examine the extent of Open Innovation and its effect on the performances of industries in emerging or growth stage of their technology life cycle, especially in Korean circumstances, such as IT-based intelligent robot technology industry, IT-based intelligent medical equipment technology industry, solar power generation technology industry and fuel cell technology industry. This study also tries to derive answers to the questions; 1)whether Open Innovation is more actualized in emerging or growth stage industries, 2)whether the effect of Open innovation on the industry performance in developmental stage is greater/different than that in other stage industries. The final objective of this study is to analyze the 4 biggest emerging or growth stage industries in Daegu, Gyungbuk district of South Korea and draw results through the comparison of the analysis of technology-related industries in post-maturity stage such as mobile and automobile industries.
